A celebration of children looked after and care leavers in Slough

November 24, 2017

Dreams were being fulfilled at Slough Children’s Services Trust’s awards ceremony for children looked after and care leavers as one of the stars of the West End theatre production of Dreamgirls – Adam J Bernard – came along to help present the awards last night (Thursday, November 23).

Actor Adam, who hails from Slough, also featured as the stunt double for John Boyega’s character – Finn – in the global blockbuster Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, has appeared on TV in Holby City and featured in other West End productions.

‘It makes me really happy and proud to be invited and involved in the Children Looked After and Care Leaver Awards, I think it’s really important to give all kids a sense of achievement, self-worth and love,’ said Adam, ‘My mum has been an active foster carer for 15 years and from my own experience, I’ve absolutely loved helping what started out to be children in need, but quickly turns into family,’ he added.

The awards are held annually for children looked after and care leavers. This year there were nearly 170 nominations, including younger children who have overcome difficulties and are doing really well at school, or have made other significant achievements. Care leavers were also recognized for re-engaging with education or securing apprenticeships or university places.

Nicola Clemo, Chief Executive of the Trust, joined Adam to present the awards. ‘This event is eagerly anticipated throughout the year as it provides us with the perfect opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible achievements of our children and young people,’ she said.

The event was attended by the children and young people, their carers and support workers, Trust board members, Trust staff and officials from Slough Borough Council.
